SST 590 Master's Thesis
This thesis course offers two tracks, each culminating in an individual master's level thesis and formally extending the degree to a 60 US credits (120 ECTS) master’s qualification.
Independent Research Thesis Track: This track is designed for students who want to deepen their analytical and intellectual engagement with sustainability challenges. Working closely with a faculty mentor, students conduct original research that advances understanding of complex social, environmental, or systemic challenges in sustainability. The track culminates in a research thesis and prepares graduates for doctoral study, policy work, or research-driven careers.
Applied Research Thesis Track: This track enables students to investigate a real-world sustainability challenge through applied and research-informed inquiry. Students formulate, or work on a research question provided by an external partner, and conduct a literature review to situate the problem within relevant scholarly and practice-based debates. Using appropriate research methodologies, they analyze the problem within its broader socio-economic and environmental systems, engage relevant stakeholders, and discuss the implications of their findings.
