SST 540 Sustainability Strategic Communication: Storytelling and Media Literacy
This module introduces students to the principles and practices of sustainability and strategic communication in contemporary society. It explores how different organizations communicate their sustainability goals, actions, challenges, and achievements to diverse audiences, including employees, communities, consumers, policymakers, investors, the media, and the wider public. The course combines theoretical and practical perspectives. Students examine how sustainability messages are shaped through storytelling, media, social media, journalism, visual communication, and emerging technologies such as AI. They learn how to translate complex scientific, governmental, or organizational information into clear, accurate, and engaging communication for different audiences. The module also emphasizes applied communication skills. Through case studies, practical exercises, and contributions from invited speakers, students reflect on how organizations can develop credible, transparent, and verifiable messages, especially during periods of change. Particular attention is given to the ethical role of communication in building trust, explaining challenges, and supporting shared values around sustainability.
