SST 501 Sustainable Economics
This course includes relevant topics, concepts, key issues, and debates in sustainability in the focus area of the course. In the final design and delivery of this course, the contents listed here will be structured according to an agreed set of two SDG case studies, taken up over the semester, which interlink the entire semester curriculum. One of the two case studies will serve as the foundation for the joint final assignment, which will be conducted as a “Model UN”–style debate session. In particular, this course explores the principles of sustainable economics, focusing on balancing economic development with environmental sustainability and social equity. Students will begin by examining the foundational macroeconomic model, providing a solid basis for subsequently analyzing emerging frameworks in sustainable economics. Topics of interest include economic systems and market dynamics, doughnut economics, post-growth and degrowth economics, wellbeing economics, and human rights–based approaches to economics; global supply chains; metrics and indicators of sustainability; as well as policy instruments for sustainability, social equity, and sustainable economics. Throughout the course, students will apply these concepts to two real-world case studies. The course prepares students to lead transformative changes in policy and practice with a commitment to sustainability and equity.
