SJS 115 Sustainability, Eco-Resilience, and Climate Justice

In the face of climate change, people around the world are innovating to create sustainable, healthy, and equitable communities. It is exciting and imaginative! Living through climate change is complex though. What could, or should we do to create a more thriving world for everyone? Who is “we”? And who is “everyone”? How can we know what the most effective solutions are? How can ordinary people make a difference? And, how can we stay engaged and hopeful in the face of increasing natural disasters? The goal of this course is twofold. First it will provide a well-rounded introduction into environmental issues, their root causes, and sustainable solutions. Second, it will provide time, space, knowledge, and skills to explore our own complex emotional and psychological responses to foster empowerment and agency. This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to some of the world’s most pressing environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, toxification and pollution, and social justice. We will get out of the classroom, learn from local experts, and explore some of Lugano’s natural beauty.
