FRE 328 Filiation Narratives in Francophone Literature
For the past decades, we have been witnessing a reevaluation of the writing of the self, whether it be the autobiographical genre or the autofictional genre via the emergence of filiation narratives that are the result of an investigation that aims at questioning the past, in particular family origins. Knowing oneself then becomes a question of knowing where one comes from, who were our ancestors, how they lived, through the examination of photographs, letters, objects, archives... Through the reading of several filiation narratives from authors calling from different francophone countries, students will examine what are the different strategies used by different authors to explore their filiation and will further be asked to reflect on their own filiation through creative works of their own.
