AHT 315 The Heritage City
Cultural heritage carries the textures of history from the past into the present. It encompasses both tangible and intangible forms, touching on architecture, art, folklore and regional traditions, as well as thoughts and ideologies. The modes for which heritage is identified, protected, documented and reflected upon is also the object of attention of particular actors, such as government bodies, NGOs, foundations, associations, academics, and independent scholars - all deciding the canons of what is worth preserving. Heritage is also a point of contestation when it comes to cultural dominance and restitution claims. In Zurich, a city with a long past of political and economic might, preservation receives prime attention at the intersection of the local and the global. In this course, discussions in the classroom and on site will include: the physical conservation of historic architecture; archives, monuments, and places of collective memories; art collections and their origins.
